BASIC 10Liners 2017

Scroll down for english rules

- senden an GKANOLD-ät-GMAIL dot COM

Erklärungen zur Klärung von Regelfragen:

0?"HELLO" sind 9 Zeichen. Es ist gleichgültig, dass ? zu PRINT wird. Es zählen die Zeichen vorm LISTen.

Ein Beispiel in Atari Basic:1F.I=1TO10:N.I = 14 Zeichen

LIST

Translation of the rules

1977 - a small group of technology enthusiast, predominantly men, owns a computer. There are hardly any commercial programs for this and so the users hardly have any other option than writing their own programs. 99% of users program their own computer. The preferred programming language is BASIC.

2017 - 40 years later - almost everyone has not only one computer. Tablets, Smartphones, Smartwatches are indispensable companions in everyday life. Nobody writes his own programs anymore. Apps for every conceivable purpose are usually just a click away. The cultural technique of programming seems to be forgotten. On the one hand, computers determine our everyday life; on the other hand, nobody knows how to control them.

The BASIC 10Liners competition is like a time journey into the time when you were still master of the machine and could tell it what you wanted from it. The competition has sparked great interest in recent years. We saw ingenious approaches to classic games, e.g. Breakout, Space Invaders, Pole Position, Tempest, or Pac Man compressed to a few lines of programming code. But also programming beginners, who created their first games with reasonable effort.

We hope to experience this year again so much creativity in just 10 lines of basic code!

Legal systems:

All 8-bit computer systems

Authorized BASIC dialects:

All line orientated BASIC dialects are allowed

Because the judges may not have the original hardware of all approved systems available, the possibility of emulating the system must be given. The authors give a recommendation for an emulator and a brief description of how to start the game.

Even if the fun of programming and the competition should be in the foreground, a few rules are needed.

Contributions are accepted in three different categories:

Category "PUR-80":

Write a game in 10 lines (max. 80 characters per logical line, abbreviations are allowed)

Category "PUR-120":

Write a game in 10 lines (max. 120 characters per logical line, abbreviations are allowed)

Category "EXTREM-256":

Write a game in 10 lines (max. 256 characters per logical line, abbreviations are allowed)

Further rules:
- loading of data or program parts from mass storage is not allowed

- the 10 lines of the programm can not contain self-written machine code

- all the code must be visible in the listing: self modifying code or hidden initialization is not allowed
- POKEing is allowed (eg change the DL, PM-graphic, sprites)
- Deadline: Saturday (not Monday!!!) 04/15 at 6 pm (Central European Time)
- Prize-giving: Saturday 04/22 at NOMAM retro convention in Lubeck/Germany

- Voting: by an expert commitee
- Together with the program a text file should be submitted with the program description and instructions, incl. description for program start with recommended emulator

- In addition to the tenliner, the same program must be submitted in "long version", that means, with one command per line; Line jumps (GOTO, GOSUB) and other dependencies must be adjusted so that the program remains fully functional
- The programmers agree to the publication of the programs, the description and the instructions by the organizer
- send to GKANOLD-ät-GMAIL dot COM

Explanations for clarifying the rules:

0?"HELLO" are 9 characters. It doesn't matter that ? becomes PRINT. Count characters before list.

An example in Atari Basic:

1F.I=1TO10:N.I = 14 characters

LIST

1 FOR I=1 TO 10: NEXT I = 23 characters, but it counts 14 characters

Submitted programs which are not according to the rules are summarized in category "WILD".
